Bargain Brands: Top Taste #1
After two months of unemployment and three years prior to that living from student loan to student loan, it should come as no surprise that I’ve been willing to give some of the supermarkets cheaper products a try in order to save a bit of cash. Needless to say that some of this experimentation has been more successful than others; so to save you the apins trail and error pain (seriously some of the value baked beans have been awful) here are some bargainious items that taste terrific even though they’re a little cheaper:
Lidl's Fresh Baked Goods – This isn't exactly artisan baking, but Lidl's pastries and fresh bread section is easily as good as anything the big 4 supermarkets offer and is significantly cheaper; for example mini baguettes are 15p each. My favourite's are the chocolate twists which at 45p each make indulging a little too easy.
Lidl Frozen Chips – Love McCain's frozen chips? Well the Harvest Basket's oven chips in the blue bag taste exactly the same and at 0.59p for a Kilo are less than half the price.
Sainsbury's Smoked Salmon Trimmings – Good for pasta, sandwiches and, my own personal favourite, scrambled eggs on seeded toast these smoked salmon scraps maybe offcuts but they taste exactly the same as their more expensive siblings on the shelf.
Aldi Amaretto – Seriously when mixed, this tastes no different to Disaronno and at £4.99 is a true bargain.
Aldi Peach Schnapps – All you need to know is that it tastes the same as Archers and if you're like me, it'll take you an age to get pissed on it. Brilliant
